Fano Leaders Celebrate the Formation of the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF)
May 2025
May 2025 | Qwara-Gonder, Ethiopia — The formation of the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) marks a major milestone in Ethiopia’s current conflict. Over 85 percent of Amhara Fano armed groups have united under one command, responding to long-standing calls for unity, coordination, and survival in the face of political repression.
Amhara Fano National Force Announced in Qwara-Gonder
The AFNF was officially launched after a multi-day congress in Qwara-Gonder. The meeting brought together senior leaders from Gojjam, Wollo (Bete-Amhara), Gonder, and Shewa. This unified structure replaces fragmented efforts and now acts as the official body coordinating political, military, and civil actions.
In its May 9, 2025 statement, the AFNF emphasized that the Amhara people’s struggle for existence had reached a critical point. While grassroots movements had gained attention, they lacked sustainability without central leadership. Therefore, the AFNF was created to provide disciplined command, national legitimacy, and strategic direction.
Mission and Vision of the Amhara Fano National Force
The Amhara Fano National Force defines itself as a nationalist organization grounded in Amhara identity. However, it also affirms support for Ethiopian sovereignty and inter-ethnic cooperation. The group’s mission includes removing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration and replacing it with a transitional joint government.
Furthermore, the AFNF aims to restore Amhara rights in territories such as Welkait, Tselemti, and Raya. These regions are central to Amhara identity, and the AFNF states that constitutional rights to self-rule and recognition must be restored.
Leadership Structure of the Amhara Fano National Force
The AFNF has created a comprehensive leadership structure. This includes a General Assembly, Central Council, Executive Committee, and a Council of Patriarchal Elders. Patriot Mesafint Tesfu currently leads the organization.
A 13-member Central Command temporarily oversees military and political operations. Notable members include Zemene Kasse, Habte Welde, Mire Wedajo, Desalegn Siyasibshewa, and General Tefera Mamo. The group is responsible for immediate decision-making until further roles are assigned.
Calls to the Amhara People and the World
The AFNF issued strong calls to the Amhara public, diaspora communities, Fano factions, government officials, and international partners.
First, the group urged full public support, describing this as a golden opportunity to unite strength with purpose. Next, it called on Amhara fighters to operate under centralized directives. Journalists and activists were also encouraged to avoid divisive narratives and focus on the core struggle.
To the diaspora, the AFNF extended a message of strategic importance. It asked for material and diplomatic support, promising to coordinate a formal global structure. Furthermore, the group invited independent Fano units to join the unified force, stressing that unity is essential for survival.
International Appeal and Allegations Against the Regime
The AFNF accused the Ethiopian government of committing human rights violations against civilians. It claimed that drones and airstrikes, allegedly supplied or coordinated with the United Arab Emirates, had targeted the Amhara population.
Additionally, the group stated that humanitarian aid was being diverted toward military efforts. As a result, the AFNF urged international actors to stop supporting the regime and instead apply diplomatic pressure for accountability and reform.
A New Era for the Amhara Resistance
The Amhara Fano National Force represents a new chapter in the Amhara struggle. What was once fragmented is now united, politically structured, and prepared to engage at all levels. This formation marks not just a military milestone, but a political transformation that could shape Ethiopia’s future.
Whether this leads to peace, further resistance, or systemic change remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the Amhara resistance now has a unified voice and a national command.
